Mike Shaffer returned to his undergraduate alma mater in 2002 (BS Exercise Science- University of Iowa- 1992).  In addition to his clinical practice he is the Coordinator for Sports Rehabilitation for the UI Sports Medicine Center.  He is also a part-time PhD student in UI’s Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science program.   He has published in Physical Therapy, Journal of Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy, Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, and Muscle and Nerve.  He frequently lectures at continuing education courses on rehabilitation topics.  His clinical and research interests relate to rehabilitation of sports medicine injuries of the knee and shoulder (particularly neuromuscular control of joint instability) and rehabilitation outcomes.  He was awarded a Mary Jo Small Fellowship at the University of Iowa in 2007 and 2010.  He is a past president of the American Society of Shoulder and Elbow Therapists and also a previous recipient of that society’s Founders Award.
